Shark Tale

great-white-2.jpgSo, some of you have probably already heard about the great white shark they have on display at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I thought this was a pretty interesting article about what it took to get her there. It says they are going to release the shark back to the wild eventually. I hope I get a chance to see it before then.

Many Bothans died to bring you this photo

Last night I went to see The Arcade Fire at the Variety Playhouse. I have to admit; I went into this concert with a somewhat negative attitude. After all, any band whose debut album has this much buzz couldn't possibly live up to the hype. Congratulations to The Arcade Fire for proving me wrong. The show was incredible. The only negative thing about the night was when some security guard hassled me for taking pictures. He told me if I took my camera out of my pocket again, he would throw me out. Umm... ok? I wasn't even using my flash. After the show, I checked my ticket and the lobby, and I still couldn't find any sign or notice forbidding photography. I asked the door guy for the scoop. Apparently, the band was afraid my picture-machine would steal a piece of their soul and had made the no-photography request. Call me old-fashioned, but if I pay $15 to see your band play, I think I should be able to take pictures of you. So, long story short, props to The Arcade Fire for rocking my face, but anti-props for their camera-phobia.

Debunking Dr. Dino

My friend Clunky Robot posted yesterday (UPDATE: and today) about a Creation Science video I received. It was 2 hours long, but it is merely the first chapter of a 17-hour lecture series by "Dr. Dino", Dr. Kent E. Hovind, who runs his own ministry called "Creation Science Evangelism". After watching the video last night (You can watch it online as well), I decided to find out a little bit more about the good "Doctor". After just a few minutes of research, I found these websites which quickly show what a quack /whacko /con artist /criminal this guy is. He's also been featured on Da Ali G show. (Someone send me a link to a video clip of this PLEASE!)

None of this, however, changes the fact that I really want to visit his backyard amusement park, Dinosaur Adventure Land. After reading these reviews, it just sounds like too much fun to pass up. I guess a road trip to Pensacola will tide me over until the opening of the new Creation Science Museum in Kentucky.

UPDATE: Interestingly enough, even the people from Answers in Genesis think Kent Hovind is wrong, wrong, wrong.

For Sale By Owner

A complete Tyrannosaurs skeleton is being auctioned online. Unfortunately, I can't really afford the $5.8 million reserve price. I am saving up for a TiVo.

Let There Be Rock

Drive-By Truckers

I made the short road trip from Atlanta to Athens on Saturday night to see one of my favorite bands, The Drive-By Truckers. They played at the fabulous 40 Watt downtown and the show was awesome. This was the last night of a three night stand to celebrate the re-release of the Truckers' first two albums, Gangstabilly and Pizza Deliverance. It was especially cool to hear the Truckers play Pizza Deliverance in its entirety. I only wish that I had been there Friday when they did the same for Gangstabilly. Thank God for BitTorrents. Click here to see a bunch of pictures I took at the show. The profits from the concerts were donated to Nuci's Space, along with an additional $5000 from Pabst Brewing Company. That guy with the huge check is my friend Will Kiser, who works at Nuci's.

You've got mail...

Check out this awesome video for The Postal Service's new single, "We Will Become Silhouettes"... I believe this is the third single from their album, Give Up which came out almost two years ago. The video is directed by Jared Hess, who also directed Napoleon Dynamite. BONUS: Check the "Recent" section of Aaron Ruell's website for some photo's of the video shoot. Aaron played Kip in Napoleon Dynamite and is, apparently, a pretty good photographer.

Arts & Crafts Time!

After being inspired by Clunky Robot, I decided to make my own t-shirts. This is my first successful attempt. Dog Named Sue seems to like it. It's based on this drawing by Frank Cho, from his upcoming Shanna the She-Devil mini-series. I am posting the stencil artwork here, for anyone else who might want to make one.

Creation Science Strikes Again!

Just when I thought it was safe to be a Southerner again... A new Creation Science museum is opening in Kentucky.

This $25 million complex will feature "Animated figures" of "Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, with a Tyrannosaurus rex pursuing them after their fall from grace..."

Some science type people have pointed out that dinosaurs and humans are separated in the fossil record by more than 60 million years. In response to this criticism, Ken Ham, president of Answers in Genesis says “Were you there?”

For only $1000, you can be a lifetime member of the Creation Museum! (Membership Fee is not tax deductible)

This video is pretty interesting too. Skip to about 3/4 of the way through it and learn what velociraptors were like "before sin." My favorite part, though, is at the end, when the guy refers to the dinosaurs as Missionary Lizards...

New Banners

Today I added a feature to the site that will randomly select the little character on my banner. So far, I have made six different versions that will rotate at random each time you visit my site, or each time you reload the page. If you want to see them all, click here.

52 Books in 52 Weeks...

For my 2005 New Year's Resolution, I'm going to follow in the footsteps of the Largehearted Boy and read 52 books in 52 weeks... I am already on book 2, Sea Dragons, by Richard Ellis. Book 1 was The Neal Pollack Anthology of American Literature, By Neal Pollack. For those of you who think that 52 books is an awful lot of reading for one year, don't worry. I am going to count graphic novels too... Check back throughout 2005 to keep updated on my Quest for Literacy. Also, feel free to leave me comments suggesting some good books to put on the list.

Major update coming

I am working on a major update to my webpage. It should be done soon. In the mean time, if there are some problems, please be patient. Thanks a lot... I think this year I will actually make more than a half dozen updates...
