Sin City

FILM ROTATION : SIN CITY: From The Comics to the Screen (NSFW-ish)

This article from filmrot has some really awesome comparisons of scenes from Sin City with panels from the original comics. I am a huge Frank Miller fan and I can't wait till the film opens tomorrow! (via Waxy)

We're famous... sort of.

The New York Times has written an article (Use bugmenot if you have to register) about the recently increased popularity of Channel 101 and 102. Down near the bottom, you'll find this paragraph...

The New York City-based Channel 102 does not have quite the following of its Los Angeles counterpart yet, but at its second gathering, held earlier this month on the Lower East Side, a group of about 100 revelers crowded into the back of the Parkside Lounge, voting on shows like "Jesus Christ Supercop," "Locked in a Closet" and "Lightning Brains."
On a related note, some nefarious interweb crooks hacked into the Silly Spider Monkey Fiasco website and used it to send out PayPal phishing scams. Because of that, our webhost had to shut the site down. Until we find a new webhost, I will try and keep my website updated with any pressing Spider Monkey info.

Banksy strikes again

Banksy is one of my favorite artists. I first heard of Banksy about a year ago, when he placed a stuffed rat in the Natural History Museum of London. Now he's hit four of NYC's most famous museums. The stuff he hung up is really awesome. After browsing his website, though, I've decided this is my favorite of his pieces.

UPDATE: Clunky hearts Banksy!

Unicorns & flying submarines

trexcontest.gifDinosaur Comics is holding a remix contest for their Things that Don't Exist video (26 MB QT). The video is based on a past comic and features a funny song as performed by a classroom of sock puppets. The video was made by Jason Eppink and is released under a creative commons license. If I have some extra time on my hands, I might enter.

More ball dodging

ATL DodgeballTonight, Respek Knuckles had it's best dodgeball showing yet, falling to Uncle Rico, 2-3, a much better showing than last week's 1-12 drubbing at the hands of the Tomahawk Ballers. I've got some pictures here.

Peelander-Z

peelander.jpgI've seen Peelander-Z twice in the past two months. They are a concert experience that must be seen to be believed. They are more of a Rock Spectacle than a band. Check out some pictures I took here. 5 out of 5 cans of SPAM...

Lightning strikes twice

lb.jpgThe second episode of Lightning Brains premiered last Thursday at the Channel 102 screening in NYC. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask) it did not receive enough votes and was cancelled. While I was mildly disappointed when I first heard the news, I realized this is what Channel 101 and 102 are all about: the creative process. Expect to see a new pilot from the Spider Monkeys sometime in the next few months.

Long-winded p2p Rant

pirate.gifI don't know how many of you are following the Grokster case, but it is going to be heard by the Supreme Court at the end of this month. Basically, the Grokster case is all about Hollywood big shots trying to stifle creativity and put an end to innovative new technologies, just because it could hurt their archaic, monopolistic business model.

I am sure most of you have used a Peer To Peer (p2p) software at one point or another to illegally download a song or movie, but did you realize there are tons of legal uses for p2p networks? Many prominent musicians realize this and have filed a brief in defense of Grokster.

The weird thing is, basically, this case was already decided by the Supreme Court, in the infamous 1984 Betamax case. If you are unfamiliar with that case, it basically states that technology that can be used legally shouldn't be outlawed simply because some people use it illegally.

The ramifications of a ruling against Grokster could be tremendous. For example, you can use an iPod to share music. Why would Apple continue selling iPods if the RIAA could just sue them for it? MP3 players, CD/DVD burners and wireless routers would become endangered species.

No company would risk making these items and selling them in the U.S. because the risk of a lawsuit would just be too great. The results could be very similar to what might happen if the Induce Act (another idea from the Music industry) is passed. Granted, that is a worst case scenario, but when these multi-billion dollar corporations are planning things like this, it doesn't sound quite so far fetched anymore.

Homage... to me?

mike.gifI was surprised by the editorial cartoon in today's Red & Black. Is that Mullet Mike on the cameraman's t-shirt? It's cool to think that people in Athens remember me when I haven't even drawn a cartoon there in almost two years. I'm a fan of Bill Richards, one of the R&B cartoonists who took over my old job. Bill gets more feedback in one week than I got in entire semesters. Sure some of it's negative, but if you ask me, that just means he's doing his job. Editorial cartoons are, after all, on the opinions page. If you are also a fan of Bill's work, check out his blog. I think it's very cool that he has this forum to interact with people. Makes me wish I had a blog when I was cartooning...or that I was still cartooning...

Cannibalism in the Animal Kingdom

shark_jump.jpggator.jpg

Great white shark to soup fin shark: "Check yo self, fool!" (Previously mentioned here)

Even though the Great White didn't eat the other shark, this story reminds me of a time I was at the Okefenokee Swamp Park in Waycross, GA. My friends and I watched as a park employee released an injured alligator back into the wild. He told us the animal was hit by a car and the park staff had nursed it back to health over a period of several months. It was around 4 feet long. As soon as the guy let it loose, another, much larger gator swam over and promptly ate it. I'd say it's one of the top 5 coolest things I've ever personally witnessed.

Reading is for losers

Someone recently mentioned to me that I have been reading the same book for some time now. That is true. I am definitely behind on my 52 books goal... but who didn't think that would happen? If you are wondering why I haven't been reading much lately, click here. The streets of Los Santos beckon.
