Just Steal It

Nike recently copied the design of a Minor Threat album cover for an ad promoting their Major Threat East Coast Skateboard Tour. Ian MacKaye, lead singer/songwriter of Minor Threat (and also Fugazi) released a statement through his label, Dischord Records, saying that Nike did not ask permission, and even if they had, he wouldn't have given it.
"[This is] just another familiar example of mainstream corporations attempting to assimilate underground culture to turn a buck. However it is more disheartening to us to think that Nike may be successful in using this imagery to fool kids ... into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission."Nike certainly doesn't epitomized the DIY "ethos," so I guess it's no wonder Minor Threat fans are upset. Now I just wonder if Rancid got permission before they released ...And Out Come the Wolves.
UPDATE: Nike has issued a formal apology to Minor Threat and Dischord Records.
