There she blows... chunks!

spermwhale.jpgMore news from Austrailia! A couple walking on the beach found a 30 pound chunk of whale vomit (AKA Ambergris) on the beach. It could be worth almost $300,000!

Color me skeptical...

"Like the Chinese art form of Feng Shui will protect you from negative energy, the shark repellent sticker aptly named Fang Shooey is said to protect you from the jaws of any shark."

Urban Medium

home_nov.jpgUrban Medium is a husband and wife art team based out of Atlanta. I have a couple of their shirts. They do a lot of Star Wars themed stickers and posters. Here is a cool video they did, using nothing but still photos. Pretty awesome. [via wooster collective]

The Perils of the Outback

My little sister will be student teaching in Australia this semester. Being an avid watcher of the Discovery Channel, I have reminded her (on numerous occasions) that many dangerous animals live there. In fact, of the world's ten most deadly snakes, eight live down under! And now, their sharks have discovered teamwork! Lately, every time I hear about a new shark, crocodile or jellyfish attack in Australia, I call my mom to let her know about it. For some reason, she doesn't seem to appreciate me keeping her up to date on these matters. So I won't need to call anymore, I found this list online of the 10 most deadly animals in Australia. Guess what... great white sharks came in at number 9! That should give you a pretty good idea of just how dangerous a trip to the Outback could be.

1. Box Jellyfish
2. Irukandji Jellyfish
3. Salt Water Crocodile
4. Blue Ring Octopus
5. Stone Fish
6. Red Back Spider
7. Brown Snake
8. Tiger Snake
9. Great White Shark
10. Funnel Web Spider

Things I missed

gervais.jpgSo during my holiday Christmas blogging hiatus, a couple of cool things happened. First, back at the begining of December, Ricky Gervais started his very own podcast. If you are a fan of Ricky's TV shows, The Office and Extras, then you will like this. If you aren't a fan of The Office and Extras, then you are dumb. So go check out The Ricky Gervais Show on Guardian Unlimited featuring the funniest man in Great Britain, Karl Pilkington. The 70-30 gang listens to it every week. So be like us and subscribe (itunes link).

chronic.jpgI also missed my chance to blog on one of the biggest web crazes of the year, Lazy Sunday, a digital short shown on Saturday Night Live. So much has already been said about this thing, so I will just give you a few links and say I am very happy for the Lonley Island guys. I think this is going to lead to even bigger things for them and other folks distributing digital shorts online.

Great White sighted in Hawaii

hawaiishark.jpgNow what you've all been waiting for... Shark News! Last week, a huge great white shark was spotted about three miles off the coast of Hawaii. It is very rare to see white sharks in the warm waters off of the Hawaiian coast, but luckily, Jimmy Hall had his video camera. Hall is a videographer for Hawaii Shark Encounters, and when he saw the 17-foot shark approaching their cage, he initially thought it was a small whale. After watching the shark for a few minutes from the safety of the cage, Hall swam out to see the shark up close and personal. Since last week, Hall has been interviewed by dozens of media outlets and is being featured on the Today Show. This guy is my new hero.

Upgrade Complete

movabletype.jpg

So I finally got around to upgrading my blog software. Now maybe my comments and trackbacks will actually work! Go ahead, give 'em a try. Also, I plan to blog more often now that the holidays Christmas is over.

First things first, I DID IT! I read 52 books in 52 weeks. I didn't think I would be able to for a while there, but I caught up a lot in November and December with some extra holiday reading time. Check out the final list of books I read here. I am planning on trying it again this year, hopefully with more actual books and fewer graphic novels this time!
